Monay Songster is a professional teaching artist who specializes in fiber and mixed media arts. She is a decade-long instructor with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and has been a lead instructor with the Program since 2015. She is also a teaching artist at Philadelphia’s Clay Studio. Monay is dedicated to bringing the visual arts to Philadelphia’s youth. She has carried out this ambition through both the Mural Arts Youth Restorative Justice and the Clay Studio’s Claymobile initiatives. She has coordinated exhibitions showcasing student artwork, created opportunities for student community service through public mural projects, organized field trips and guest speaking engagements, and managed program budgets. The list of her proven skills include classroom management, lesson planning, coaching/mentoring, teaching/instructing, painting, mural making, exhibition development, and arts advocacy. Through art, Monay aims to stimulate and cultivate imagination and inspiration in young minds so that they can discover their ability to rise above life’s challenges and turn obstacles into opportunities. As an instructor she strives to connect her students to a world of creativity, growth, and possibility; all within an atmosphere of curiosity, trust, and safety.
